Fiorella Daniele
Student Spotlight

When I moved to San Diego in 2018, I started by taking a class for a second language at the library near my home. After one semester I followed a friend's advice and I attended the Poway Adult School.
First, I improved my grammar knowledge and then I learned how to write and analyze an essay. At Poway Adult School, I found a lot of support and answers to my questions. I attended workshops and received one-to-one career guidance to learn how to write a winning resume and plan for interviews! There, I discovered the opportunity to continue my studies at Palomar College. After I got my certification in Bookkeeping at Palomar College, I contacted the Poway Adult School again. Mrs. Denise McAndrews helped me fine-tune my resume and prepare me to “ace” an upcoming interview. I got the job! Now, I am working and I love the job! In fact, I have been offered a job by another company as well. My English is still not perfect and I continue to attend advanced English and grammar classes at Palomar College to build my skills. I am thankful for the help I received at Poway Adult School.

Sheri Johnson
Student Spotlight

Picture
Sheri Johnson is one of our top Business Program students and has completed several classes here at Vista Adult School. Her goal has been to retrain for a new career after the company she worked for shut down in 2021.
Sheri originally completed our Billing/Coding program back in 2019 and decided to return to the pursue Bookkeeping/Accounting pathway. She has demonstrated enthusiasm and motivation to complete all of her assignments and go beyond the standard coursework. She has been a straight-A student while in our program and every instructor has spoken highly of her. Her instructors have commented that she is very hard working, very communicative and a pleasure to have in class. Furthermore, she extends her learning and understanding of the concepts by volunteering to help other students who are having trouble balancing their books. Sheri says about her Accounting 2 class: “I love this class. It has opened up many opportunities in business for me. Thank you, Vista Adult School.”

Sheri’s current plan is to complete the Bookkeeping/Accounting classes and then participate in graduation. She hopes to obtain an accounting position in the local community. We wish Sheri luck in her future endeavors! We are confident that she will make a fantastic addition to a local office in the accounting department.

Pattie Campbell
Faculty Spotlight

Picture
Our Advanced ESL program has been taught by Pattie Campbell for the last 10 years at Vista Adult School.
Pattie came to VAS after retiring as an administrator in Vista Unified School District. She took a break for about 3 months and then became a hearing officer for student services and worked with the Sheriff's Department focusing on students with truancy problems. Sixteen years ago she joined the staff at VAS teaching an English Orientation class, then ESL levels 2-4 and CBET classes until she moved to the Advanced level where she teaches both morning and night classes. She shares that she has found her passion in life and enjoys her students who she considers her extended family. She celebrates her students’ achievements every week. On Thursdays, everyone has the opportunity to share something positive that has happened to them via the conversation groups that meet during the last 30 minutes of class. She says that seeing some of her students join her class with little confidence in their abilities and within a few months become more confident and focused on their goals is one of the greatest rewards. She always shares emails with her classes from former students who thank her and want to share their challenges and successes. From grammar reviews, paragraph editing, journal writing, daily reading to Socratic seminars her students thrive in the atmosphere provided. No wonder she says that after 52 years in Vista Unified, she can’t fathom retiring again and not enjoying her students on a daily basis.
