Turning Challenges into Opportunities

2020-2021 Annual Report

A New Era Begins

This year marked a new era for Education to Career Network of North San Diego County, adult education, and the world. The 2020-2021 school year asked educators, students, families, and communities to dig deep and respond to extraordinarily challenging times.
The uncertainties of a global pandemic and the necessity of continuing operations in a remote, online environment, called upon our dedicated teachers, administrators and staffs, to create new strategies for learning and for reaching out and supporting students.

With an increased emphasis on equity, empathy for each other and for students, we now see how the challenges we all have faced this past year have led to new opportunities, providing us with a positive, forward-thinking outlook for the future.

Keeping Focused

With a focus on expansion of remote, on-line learning opportunities and support services for all students our teachers, counselors, and administrators worked diligently to keep students engaged and on track to reach their education and career goals.

While the total number of students served across ETCN was down in certain classes and programs, many students welcomed the increase in on-line class options as they provided the flexibility needed as work and family obligations shifted. Additionally, general support and counseling services saw an increase as counselors conducted more direct outreach to keep students engaged.

Doing Things Differently

Drive-up Enrollment

Our schools offered a chance for students to enroll in classes through a “drive-up” event held at several campuses throughout the year. Many students were able to meet their instructors and pick up their supplies and materials through this innovative, safe, in-car event.

Doing Things Differently

Meet the Employer

Business partners including Amazon, the American Red Cross and Poway Unified School District, provided live, on-line virtual events with students to discuss what education and skills are needed to enter their industry. Students participated in Q&A and were invited to send their resumes to set up on-line interviews following the events.

Adult Education Week

The County of San Diego and many of the ETCN cities proclaimed April 19-23, 2021,“Adult Education Week.” Escondido Adult School hosted the Mayor of Escondido who presented a proclamation at a socially distanced celebration at their school.

By the numbers

While some classes and programs were curtailed during this unprecedented time, our untiring teachers, and staffs across ETCN continued to find creative ways to support students at all levels, to ensure they reached their education goals. To meet the increasing demand for healthcare workers, ETCN offered several accelerated healthcare programs, allowing students to enter the workforce faster, to assist their communities experiencing critical shortages.

The Kickstart Our Economy Needs

It’s time for Californians to return to work, pursue higher education and support their own K-12 learners. To continue serving our community particularly amid the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical to maintain – if not grow – current funding levels.
