How a Mother and Daughter Battled Back to Change Their Lives with Support from Ramona Adult Education
In 2015, a family in Ramona experienced a tragic loss. Yolanda lost her husband, and her daughter, Thalia, lost her father.
After her husband’s passing, Yolanda struggled to find a job to support her daughter. Without a high school diploma, her options were limited. She did the best she could as a single mother, but it was becoming increasingly hard to make ends meet at home.
Thalia, a senior at Montecito High School, who had already struggled with classwork, began to struggle even more after the loss of her father. She lacked the motivation and enthusiasm for the classroom, even considering dropping out of school like her mother had done. It seemed like Thalia was destined to follow in her mother’s path.
After coming to terms with her new reality, Yolanda made a bold decision to take control of her life by making a major lifestyle change – enrolling in Ramona Adult School to take classes to receive her GED certification. Since the classes are held on the Montecito High School campus where Thalia is enrolled, she could make her journey alongside her daughter.
“I am really proud of my mom, because after everything that has happened to her, she could have just made excuses, but instead, she doesn’t make excuses and she works hard to make her life better. That helps me to want to make my life better.” – Thalia
This inspired Thalia to also make changes. She began working harder in school and dedicating time to her education, which translated over to her report card and she received a 4.0 GPA for the first time. Shortly thereafter, Yolanda passed two of her GED classes. She is now on track to receive her GED certificate in June when Thalia graduates from high school.
After graduation, Thalia plans on attending community college to begin coursework in business. Yolanda would like to use her GED certificate to find a better paying job to help Thalia attend college. This amazing duo exemplifies how families can defy the odds.
“I am thankful for having the opportunity to attend Ramona Adult School. It was there at the right time when I needed it most.” – Yolanda
