RAS Student Spotlight: Socorro Cervantes

Last year, we introduced readers to RAS teacher Josh McCrohan and his future mother-in-law, Socorro Cervantes. Here's the next chapter in that inspiring story.

Socorro originally graduated from high school in Mexico. After immigrating to the United States and raising her family, she set her sights on earning a GED—to prove to herself and others that she could do it. The family joke was that her husband, a U.S. high school graduate, teased her about having a diploma from Mexico. So, she set out to even the score.

She began attending Ramona Adult School in 2019 and quickly passed the English, History, and Science sections. But Math proved more difficult.
Then came the pandemic, which put her progress on pause. Some asked why she was still trying—but she refused to be discouraged. Last year, with renewed determination and support from her future son-in-law (and newest RAS staff member), Josh McCrohan, she returned. Josh picked her up every Tuesday evening for GED tutoring sessions.

On the very last Wednesday of the school year, Socorro passed her Math test. It’s safe to say there were happy tears all around.

She proudly walked in the Class of 2025’s graduation ceremony on June 3, with her entire family cheering her on.

There are many possible takeaways from this story. One is about perseverance. Another? Never underestimate Socorro Cervantes—she now has two diplomas to her husband’s one.
